Late/non collection of child

Aim of policy

To give clear guidance to practitioners and Parents of what will occur should late or non collection of a child occur.

Points to consider

Castle Daycare & Preschool work in close partnership with parents and recognise the importance of sensitivity and empathy should this procedure need to be implemented.

In the event that a child is not collected by an authorised adult at the end of the day, to cause as little distress as possible, we will ensure the child is cared for safely by an experienced and qualified practitioner who is known to the child.  Two staff members will stay with the child until the parent arrives. One member of staff will be ideally their key person the other will be a senior team member.

We will inform parents/carers of our procedures so that, if they are unavoidably delayed, they will be reassured that their child will be properly cared for.

Procedure to follow

If parent/guardian/carer is repeatedly late collecting their child it is the responsibility of the Nursery Manager/Deputy to discuss this with them.

In those instances where a parent is over 15 minutes late and has not made contact with the nursery the following procedure must be followed:

1.            Person in charge to attempt to make contact with parent / carer.

2.            Person in charge to notify the area manager who in turn will contact other management team members if needed.

3.            Person in charge to attempt to contact parent’s employer (if they work)

4.            Person in charge to attempt to make contact with those authorised to collect the child.

5.            If after all reasonable attempts to contact parent carers and emergency contacts have failed then the nursery manager will evaluate the situation, i.e. length of time the child has been left, whether it’s a reoccurring problem, or if contact numbers are disconnected. Upon which she will contact a member of the operations team before contacting Social Services.

6.            The last two team members on duty are required to stay with the child until collected.

Social services contact number: 03456 009 009

Emergency out of hours team: 01483 517898

Ofsted contact number: 0300 123 1231

  1. Person in charge to keep Area Manager up to date at each stage. A full written report of the incident must be recorded by the person in charge.

  1. Depending on circumstances, Castle Daycare & Preschool reserve the right to charge parents for the additional hours worked by our staff.

It is imperative that throughout the implementation of the procedure the child is not distressed.  The situation must be explained to all contacts calmly and clearly.

Children’s Activity Policy

Aim of the Policy

Castle Daycare & Preschool inform parents/carers of the different types of activities that their child participates in and the purpose of the activities.

Points to Consider

At Castle Daycare & Preschool we provide a flexible routine with a structured free play approach. This provides the children with opportunities for adult focused and child-initiated activities both indoors and outdoors. The children have access to resources so they can use their initiative and make choices. The flexible routine and environment allows children the opportunity to have energetic play and quiet times when they can rest and relax.

Using the key person policy we plan for and meet the individual needs of the each child. We use the Early Years Foundation Stage’s seven areas of learning and development to shape our planning. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. The three prime areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The three prime areas are:

          Communication and language

          Physical development

          Personal, social and emotional development

We also support children in four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.

The four specific areas are:

          Literacy

          Mathematics

          Understanding the world

          Expressive arts and design

We provide the parents with daily information about their child’s day including activities and outcomes. Parents are provided with a verbal handover at the end of session/day as well as either a daily sheet or information on the daily news board. The children’s long and medium term planning is displayed on the parent’s information board. A copy of the child’s individual short term planning is given to the parents for their information and input to ensure future provision is planned for by both the key person and parents/carers.

Early Years Foundation Stage Policy

Aim of Policy

At Castle Daycare & Preschool we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage to provide the children with the best possible start in life. By using the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage we ensure we comply with the requirements and we aim to achieve this to an outstanding level.

We deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage to ensure quality standards are set in our nurseries, to provide equality of opportunity, to help us to work as partners with parents and other practitioners and professionals, to instil high quality and consistency of care and education, to lay a secure foundation for to promote ‘school readiness’ and to safeguard the children and promote their welfare.

Points to Consider

All of the planning at Castle Daycare & Preschool is based on the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage. We believe good planning is the key to making children’s learning effective, exciting, varied and progressive. A mixture of adult-led and child-initiated play and activities are used to implement the areas of learning. We use the areas of learning and development to structure how we deliver the activities and experiences for the children whilst they work towards the early learning goals, incorporating the children’s emerging needs and interests. We ensure children’s different ways of learning are reflected in our planning and environment. We promote effective teaching and learning through:

  • Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things and ‘have a go’
  • Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy achievements
  • Creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

We measure the children’s progress regularly on a summative and formative basis with parental involvement in the nursery and home settings. We provide the parents/carers with a ‘Progress Check at the Age of Two’ which they are encouraged to share with other relevant professionals. Where a child attends another provision which provides the Early Years Foundation Stage we aim to work with them to complement a good overall programme.

The four principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage guide our practice in our nurseries: We ensure:

  • Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured;
  • Children learn to be strong and independent, through positive relationships;
  • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents/carers;
  • Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.

There are seven areas of learning and development which shape our planning. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. The three prime areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The three prime areas are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

We also support children in four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.

The four specific areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

If a child’s progress in any prime area gives cause for concern we will discuss this with the child’s parents/carers and agree how to support the child. This may include involving other professionals and developing an Individual Educational Plan. For children whose home language is not English we will take reasonable steps to support the use of the child’s home language whilst developing their English language. See the English as an Additional Language policy, EAL.
